Outlook - Unable to Drag and Drop File

Outlook - Unable to Drag and Drop File

Problem

This document explains how to troubleshoot and resolve issues with dragging and dropping files into Microsoft Outlook.

Solution

  1. Install the latest Windows updates.

    1. Keeping Windows fully updated can resolve known Outlook and drag-and-drop issues.

  2. Update Microsoft 365 Apps.

    1. In Outlook, go to File > Office Account and select Update Options > Update Now.

  3. Restart Outlook and restart the computer.

    1. Closing and reopening Outlook can clear temporary issues. Restarting the computer is also recommended, especially after Windows or Microsoft 365 updates are installed.

  4. If using classic Outlook, try opening it in Safe Mode.

    1. To open Safe Mode, press Windows + R, type

      outlook /safe

      and press Enter.

    2. Safe Mode starts Outlook without add-ins or customizations. If drag and drop works in Safe Mode, an add-in may be causing the issue.

  5. Disable Outlook add-ins if the issue continues.

    1. If drag and drop works in Safe Mode, disable add-ins and reopen Outlook normally. Re-enable them one at a time until the problem returns.

  6. Repair Microsoft 365.

    1. If Outlook still does not allow drag and drop, repair Microsoft 365 from Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise > 3dots > Modify, then choose Online Repair.
