Computer - Improve Performance

This article provides steps to improve the performance of a PC running Windows. Follow the suggestions in order, testing your PC’s performance after each one.

Instructions

  1. Install the latest Windows updates and device drivers

    • Ensure Windows Update is enabled and up to date. Use the Windows Update settings and Device Manager to check for the latest drivers. For manufacturer-specific drivers, refer to the vendor’s support site.

  2. Restart your PC and close unused applications

    • Restarting clears memory and stops unnecessary background processes. Only open the applications you need.

  3. Use ReadyBoost

    • Insert a USB flash drive and enable ReadyBoost from its properties. This can help improve performance on systems with limited RAM. ReadyBoost is supported on Windows 10 and 11 but may offer minimal benefit on systems with SSDs.

  4. Let Windows manage the page file

    • Ensure automatic management of the paging file size. Go to System > Advanced system settings > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual memory.

  5. Free up disk space

    • Use the built-in Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup tool to remove temporary files, system cache, and unused files. Uninstall unnecessary apps.

  6. Adjust visual effects

    • Choose performance settings by navigating to System > Advanced system settings > Performance > Settings. Select "Adjust for best performance" or customize to disable unnecessary animations and effects.

  7. Pause OneDrive syncing

    • Right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray, then pause syncing to reduce disk and CPU usage temporarily.

  8. Disable startup programs

    • Open Task Manager > Startup tab. Disable programs that are not essential on startup to reduce boot time.

  9. Scan for malware and viruses

    • Run a full scan using Microsoft Defender or a trusted third-party antivirus. Ensure virus definitions are current.

  10. Use System Restore

    • If performance dropped after recent changes, restore your PC to an earlier point using System Restore. This can reverse recent software or driver changes without affecting personal files.
