AMS - Unable to Open PDF files
Problem
Users may encounter issues when attempting to open PDF files within AMS. This guide outlines steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem, ensuring users can access PDF documents smoothly.
Solution
Set Default PDF Application
Open the Start Menu and search for Default Apps.
Select Choose default apps by file type.
Scroll down to find the .pdf file extension.
Verify that the default application for .pdf files is set to Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Adobe Acrobat (the full Adobe Acrobat application). If it is not, change it to the appropriate Adobe software.
Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is recommended as the standard PDF viewer to ensure full compatibility with AMS.
Verify AMS PDF Viewer Settings
Ensure AMS is configured to open PDFs using the system’s default PDF application.
Confirm there are no AMS-specific viewer settings overridden by IT policies or user configurations.
Check for Software Updates
Verify AMS is updated to the latest version, as recent updates may include fixes for file handling issues.
Update Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to the latest release to avoid compatibility problems.
Restart the computer after updates.
If PDFs still fail to open, check if security software (antivirus or firewall) is blocking Adobe Acrobat or AMS from launching or opening files.
Verify that Windows file associations and permissions are intact for PDF files.
Restart AMS and attempt to open the PDF again.
Note that .MSG files (Outlook email messages) should open in Microsoft Outlook by default. If users have trouble opening .MSG files, verify the default application for .MSG files is set to Outlook.
After applying the above steps, confirm with the user that PDF files open successfully in AMS.
