Google Chrome - Missing bookmarks

Google Chrome - Missing bookmarks

Problem

This article explains how to restore missing bookmarks in Google Chrome.

Solution

Verify bookmarks are not hidden

  1. Open Google Chrome.

  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + B to toggle the Bookmarks Bar on and off.

  3. Check the Bookmarks Bar and Other Bookmarks for the missing items.

Check Bookmark Manager

  1. Click the three-dot menu (top-right).

  2. Select Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager (or press Ctrl + Shift + O).

  3. Review all folders, including:

    • Bookmarks Bar

    • Other Bookmarks

    • Mobile Bookmarks

    • Any custom folders

  4. Use the search bar to look for specific bookmark names.

Check Google account sync If bookmarks were synced with a Google account:

  1. Open Chrome Settings.

  2. Go to You and Google and confirm the user is signed in to the correct Google account.

  3. Select Sync and Google services.

  4. Ensure Bookmarks sync is enabled.

  5. If sync was disabled, re-enable it and allow time for bookmarks to sync.

Confirm the correct Chrome profile is in use Chrome bookmarks are profile-specific.

  1. Click the profile icon in the top-right corner of Chrome.

  2. Verify the correct profile is selected.

  3. Switch profiles if necessary and recheck bookmarks.

Restore bookmarks from a local backup (Advanced)

If bookmarks were recently lost, Chrome may still have a local backup.

  1. In Chrome, copy the Profile Path from chrome://version. It will usually look something like:
    Windows: C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
but it may also be Profile 1, Profile 2, and so on.

  2. Close Chrome completely. Do not leave any Chrome windows open while doing the file rename.

  3. Open that profile folder in Finder or File Explorer and look for two files named Bookmarks and Bookmarks.bak. Those are the active bookmarks file and the local backup file.

  4. Before changing anything, copy both files to another folder as a safety backup. That same recovery guidance recommends saving copies first.

  5. Rename the current Bookmarks file to something like Bookmarks.old.

  6. Rename Bookmarks.bak to Bookmarks by removing the .bak extension.

  7. Reopen Chrome and check your bookmarks. The restored file should load as your bookmarks database.

This method only works if the .bak file exists and was created before the bookmarks were lost.

Restoring from a backup may overwrite current bookmarks created after the backup date.

If bookmarks were deleted long ago and no backup or sync data exists, recovery may not be possible.
