Printer - HP LaserJet Pr 400 Not Detected
Problem
When connecting the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n printer to a computer using a USB cable, Windows may fail to detect the printer. Instead of installing it as a printer, the system displays an AutoPlay prompt for “CD Drive (D:) HP Smart Install.” The printer does not appear under Printers & Scanners, and the USB001 (Virtual Printer Port for USB) option is unavailable when attempting manual installation.
Solution
This issue can be caused by the HP Smart Install feature being enabled on the printer.
This feature mounts a virtual CD drive to auto-install drivers.
To resolve the issue, disable HP Smart Install from the printer’s control panel:
On the printer’s control panel, press the Setup (wrench icon) button.
Navigate to: Service > HP Smart Install > Off
Press OK.
Turn the printer off, then back on.
Reconnect the USB cable directly to the computer (avoid USB hubs).
Windows should now detect the printer and install the driver automatically.
If not, download and install the Full Feature Software and Driver (PCL6) from the HP Support site: https://support.hp.com/drivers
To verify installation:
Open Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners (or Control Panel > Devices and Printers).
Confirm that HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n appears in the list.
Right-click > Printer Properties > Print Test Page to confirm functionality.
This issue is common on Windows 10 and Windows 11 due to Smart Install compatibility issues.
Keep Smart Install disabled to avoid future issues.
If the printer is still not detected, run HP Print and Scan Doctor to repair USB connections: https://support.hp.com/app/psd
