Problem

This article provides instructions on how to resolve the issue of OneDrive not running in the background, which can prevent access to files stored on OneDrive or network resources.

Solution

  1. Start OneDrive Manually

    • Click on the Start menu and begin typing OneDrive.

    • Press Enter or click the OneDrive app to open it.

    • Once OneDrive opens, verify that the files are available and syncing properly.

  2. Check OneDrive's Settings

    • Right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray (bottom-right of the taskbar).

    • Click Settings then go to Sync and backup. Ensure the option Start OneDrive when I sign in to Windows is checked.

    • If it’s unchecked, enable it and restart your computer.

  3. Check Windows Startup Settings

    • Click on the Start menu and type Settings.

    • In the computer Settings go to Apps > Startup.

    • Ensure that Microsoft OneDrive is turned on.

  4. Reinstall OneDrive

    • If none of the above solutions work, you can uninstall and reinstall OneDrive.

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft OneDrive > click 3 dots > click Uninstall.

    • After uninstalling, download the latest version from the official Microsoft site and reinstall it.
