Ethernet - Not working with docking station

This knowledge base article offers a step-by-step guide for troubleshooting ethernet connection issues with a docking station.

Instructions

 

  1. Make sure the ethernet cable is working by having the user plug it directly into their PC. If it does work, have them plug the ethernet cable back into the dock and continue to step 2. If not, escalate the ticket

  2. Have the user unplug the power cable of the docking station from BOTH the dock itself AND where it is plugged into the wall/surge protector. After 1-2 minutes, plug everything back in. If the ethernet connection still does not work, continue to step 3

  3. Check the network adapter's power output.

    1. Click the Windows button.

    2. Type device then select Device Manager.

    3. In the Device Manager window, expand the Network adapters section.

    4. Right-click the active network adapter (docking station) then select Properties.

    5. In the Properties window, open the Advanced tab.

    6. Under Property, select Power Output.

    7. Under Value, select 75%.

    8. Click OK.

    9. Close Device Manager and restart the computer.

    10. Make sure the docking station is connected and check if the Ethernet is working on your computer.

    11. ​​​​​If not, continue.

  4. Change energy efficiency settings.

    1. Click the Windows button.

    2. Type device then select Device Manager.

    3. In the Device Manager window, expand the Network adapters section.

    4. Right-click the active network adapter (docking station) then select Properties.

    5. In the Properties window, open Advanced tab.

    6. Under Property, select Energy Efficient Ethernet.

    7. Under Value, select Disabled / Off.

    8. Click OK.

    9. Close Device Manager and restart the computer.

    10. Make sure the docking station is connected and check if the Ethernet is working on your computer.
