OneNote - Not syncing between devices

OneNote - Not syncing between devices

Problem

Use this article when your OneNote notes are not updating across devices, a notebook shows sync errors, or recent changes appear on one device but not another. OneNote sync works through OneDrive or SharePoint, so app issues, account issues, network issues, or storage problems can all prevent syncing.

Before you begin:

Make sure you are signed in to the correct work account on every device. If you use more than one Microsoft account, confirm the notebook is opened under the same account everywhere. If the notebook is shared, also make sure you still have permission to access it.

Solution

  1. Check your internet connection.

    • A weak or unstable connection can stop OneNote from syncing properly.

  2. Make sure you’re signed in to the correct account on every device.

    • If the notebook is shared, also confirm you still have permission to open and edit it. This is especially important for work notebooks.

  3. Try a manual sync.

    • In OneNote on Windows (desktop): go to File > View Sync Status and select Sync Now.

    • On Mobile:

      1. iPhone/iPad: pull down the notebooks list to force a sync.

      2. Android: Open Notebooks > Settings > tap Sync all.

  4. Open the notebook in OneNote for the web.

    • Open the same notebook in OneNote for the web. If the web version shows your latest notes, the cloud copy is healthy and the issue is likely limited to the app or device you are using. If the web version does not show the latest changes, the notebook may still be failing to sync to OneDrive or SharePoint.

  5. Update OneNote. Use the latest supported version on each device.

  6. Repair or reset the app on Windows.

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise > Modify then choose Online Repair for the most complete repair.

Be cautious with cache-clearing or closing/reopening notebooks.

Do this only after confirming your latest notes are visible in OneNote for the web or otherwise backed up, because unsynced local changes can be lost.
